Pinda Nandi (Foetal Gratitude) class-II

Play Kolatheerasha Sthavam Audio
With earth, water, fire,
Air and space, put into a crucible,
In their proper proportion,
And lighting them with a fire,
You protected this foetus
Of mine from the oppressions
Of an evil deity, and nourished it
Then, in your nectarine Immortality
O the Bringer of Happiness!

(“Mannum jalam kanalum ambaramodu kaattum
Ennippidicharayilitteriyum koluthi
Dandappeduthumoru devathayingal ninnen
Pindathinannu amruthu nalki valartha sambho”):

Mannum jalam kanalum ambaramodu kaattum = all the five elements of the cosmic universe; i.e. earth, water, fire, air and space.

Ennippidichu = according to the proper proportion (as specified in Upanishads such as three-fold qualities and blending together of five components to form an iota).

Arayilittu = in a crucible (inside foetus)
eriyum koluthi = lighting them with a fire (vital breathing air)
Dandappeduthum = oppressions (causing difficulties)
oru devathayingal ninnu = from the forces of an evil deity.
en pindathinu = my foetus
annu amruthu nalki = during the development stage, I was given your nectarine of immortality.

This verse narrates God’s grace on foetal developmental stage that consists of all the five elements of the cosmic universe - earth, water, fire, air and space, which are brought in according to the proper proportion. This concept of forming an iota is specified in Upanishads such as three-fold qualities (Thrivathkaranam) and blending together of five components (Pancheekaranam). It is the Lord who brings the vital air to breathe inside and also who protects my foetus from evil deity. Thus, I am grateful to you O Lord Siva, for protecting me by giving the nectarine of immortality.
